APPLICATION: OOC information: Name (or what you want us to call you): Randa Contact information: leeeapoffaith | leeeapoffaith@gmail.com Timezone: CST Holds: Patrick Dempsey/Adam Young (held under lessthanbashful)
Your character: Full name: Richard Joseph Thompson Age: 31 Birthday: June 21, 1977 Occupation: Coffee shop owner Location: Los Angeles
Literary Character: Adam Young from Good Omens Ability: He can change things according to his will. He can only affect objects in his vicinity, and he can’t affect very large objects. For example, he could do something like cause a houseplant to grow or change the color of the paint on his walls, if he chose to do so. His ability doesn’t have any affect at all on humans. Personality: One of the most prominent features of Richard's personality is that he is immensely pragmatic. As a rule, he's sensible, down-to-earth, and matter-of-fact. If it's illogical, he probably has trouble comprehending it or seeing the reason for it. He doesn't immediately write off things that aren't logical, he just doesn't quite know how to deal with them, and not for lack of trying. He's analytical and calculating, investing a great deal of thought into every decision he makes.
He's hard-working and focused. In fact, he's something of a workaholic at times, spending numerous hours of overtime at the office. Once he devotes himself to a task, he will use every resource available to him to complete it. This also makes him extremely reliable and dependable. If he says he'll do something, you can trust in the fact that he'll keep his word.
He doesn't like to need people; he's independent through and through. In his mind, if he needs people, then he's placing himself at unnecessary risk for getting hurt and placing control of his life in someone else's hands. And he, quite frankly, doesn't like that idea at all in his current state of mind. In his mind, it’s better to repress anything negative he feels and deal with it on his own terms, rather than openly admitting to such feelings.
Richard is very levelheaded and composed, so it's difficult to anger him or get a rise out of him. However, because he tries to suppress his emotions, once he is pushed to his limits, he can be quite hotheaded. He's also terribly stubborn and hardheaded at times, which stems from his determined nature, and he dislikes admitting when he's wrong.
Richard is a rather flawed man, but he's not without any redeeming traits. If you ever manage to get past his defenses, he's an immensely loyal and protective individual. He's very polite, a true gentleman; he's the type who'll hold doors open for females and pull their chairs out for them if they're out at dinner. While he may not trust people very easily, that does not mean that he is rude or dismissive of people. He is actually quite easy to get along with most of the time, because he's good-natured and kind even in casual interactions. Once he befriends someone, he will be more relaxed and more willing to loosen up and joke around, but it takes a long time to get to that point.
History: Richard Thompson's upbringing was nothing if not typical. Born to financially well-off parents, he lived in a nice but otherwise unremarkable house on a quiet street in the suburbs in Boston. His older sister dragged him along to play games, he got into the trouble that all young boys do, and his days were fun and eventful for the young boy but nothing particularly noteworthy.
Richard never caused much of a stir at home or at school. After all, his sister was dramatic enough (read: insane enough) to cause enough trouble for both of them. Richard soon learned that upon becoming a teenager, his sister essentially went insane. Suddenly, the girl who had been his almost constant companion for years was gossiping about cute boys and messing about with makeup and nail polish and absolutely none of it made sense to Richard. Every time her boyfriend of the week broke up with her, it was the END OF THE WORLD OH MY GOD (that's right, they didn't have netspeak back then, she dramaed it old school), and every little thing was reason enough to cause a dramafit where she’d lock herself in her room for hours on end. Richard loved his sister dearly, but he resigned himself to the fact that she was clearly out of her mind and moved on to make new friends his own age (preferably ones with their sanity intact).
Even at a young age, he proved to be mature beyond his years and almost overly calculating at times. While other children his age were off running around and playing games, he preferred the quiet solitude of reading a book. He wasn't antisocial, but he was far from the most outgoing person in his group of friends. He stuck closely to what was familiar, and that was that. In high school, and later college, Richard was focused on his studies and little else. He wanted to get a good education so he could pursue a successful, respectable career and be content. After all, it Just Made Sense. Intelligent, pragmatic, and charming in his own right, Richard was well-liked if not altogether popular in school. He wasn't involved in sports, but he was a member of numerous academic and community service clubs, as well as student government.
His father wanted Richard to follow in his footsteps and be a doctor, but Richard had different plans. He was accepted to a college in California, so he jumped at the chance to study there. Sure, it was all the way across the country, but as much as he missed his family and the familiarity of home, he had always been independent and self-reliant so he adjusted quickly.
Richard found that he actually liked LA, settling into his new life there with relative ease. He studied business in college, and one day a classmate approached him with a proposition for after college was through. His friend wanted to open a coffee shop after graduation, and he asked Richard to be his business partner. Richard was actually intriguied by the idea, so he agreed. He worked several odd jobs throughout college and afterward to save money for the shop. Finally, a few years after graduation, their hard work paid off and they finally found the place that was to be the future location of their coffee shop. One day, while setting everything up and preparing for the opening of the shop, Richard's friend christened the shop The Daily Grind. Richard just rolled his eyes and smiled, and the name stuck. So, The Daily Grind it was. Once the shop opened, it took a while for them to establish themselves; now, however, they're pretty well-known locally and do a good amount of business.
Then, his ability decided to manifest. One night, while going over paperwork for the shop at home, he needed a pen. After a search of his desk produced only a pencil, he found himself wishing for a pen, and when he looked down, there was a pen in his hand in place of the pencil. Needless to say, that didn’t fit in with Richard’s logical outlook on life at all. So, he decided to ignore his ability if at all possible. In fact, he avoids using his ability entirely, aside from accidental moments where he finds himself wishing for a small change before he realizes it. No, he doesn't like to talk about it all that much, and forcing him to do so leaves him with a perpetual ._. expression on his face.
